Do I need any experience to go dog mushing?
Not at all! This experience is designed specifically for first-timers. Your guide will walk you through everything before you ever leave the starting line. If you can sit comfortably & follow instructions, you’re ready!!
Am I driving the sled?
No. Guests are passengers throughout the entire experience. Your guide operates the sled while you take in the scenery, the dogs, & the trail. Sit back, relax, & enjoy every second of it.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Less than you might expect! Guests are seated for the majority of the experience. A basic level of comfort sitting for extended periods is all that’s required. Guests with serious back, neck, or joint conditions should consult their physician before booking.
What should I wear?
Proper cold-weather attire is mandatory & non-negotiable for your safety. You’ll need warm base layers, an insulated winter coat, waterproof insulated boots, hat, & gloves or mittens. How many dogs will be on my team?
Team sizes vary depending on trail conditions, combined passenger weight, & the dogs’ training schedule. Your guide will pair you with the right team for the day’s conditions.
Can I interact with the dogs before and after the run?
Absolutely — and we encourage it! Meeting your team before you head out is part of the experience. Our dogs are trail-bred, well-socialized, and love the attention. That said, our guides are the final authority on all animal interactions — full stop. If a guide instructs guests to step back, stop petting, or disengage from the dogs for any reason, that instruction must be followed immediately & without question. The health, safety, & welfare of our dogs is non-negotiable, & our guides are trained to make real-time decisions that protect both the animals & our guests. Guests who fail to follow guide instructions regarding animal interaction will be removed from the activity without refund. Alaska Wild Lights assumes no liability for injuries or incidents resulting from a guest’s failure to comply with guide direction. *Our dogs are the heart of this experience — we ask that you treat them with the same respect & care that we do.*
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes, with strict conditions. Children must be at least 7 years old to board the sled. Children under 7 who’ve purchased a ticket may visit the base camp & meet the dogs, but may not participate in the ride. A parent or guardian must remain with their child at all times. Please review our Children Under 7 policy in full before booking.
What happens if there isn’t enough snow?
Dog mushing requires adequate snow coverage to operate safely. In the rare event that trail conditions do not meet our safety standards, Alaska Wild Lights reserves the right to cancel or reschedule your booking. Affected guests will be offered an alternative date or a full refund.
Where is Base Camp located?
Our base camp is located in Ester, Alaska, approximately 20–45 minutes from most Fairbanks hotels, depending on your location. Transportation is not included in this tour but is available as a paid add-on at checkout. We strongly recommend adding transportation & Trip Protection to your booking for a seamless, carefree experience.
Is gratuity included?
Gratuity is not included in the tour price. If your guide delivers an exceptional experience, & we’re confident they will, tipping is always appreciated & goes directly to your guide.
What time should I arrive?
Guests must be checked into Base Camp no later than 45 minutes before their scheduled adventure start time. Pre-tour briefings begin at a fixed time & will not be delayed for late arrivals. Please plan accordingly.
